What are Pine Cones?

Pine cones or conifer cones are highly textured woody seed bearing organs from Pine Trees. They are oval in shape and the protruding scales will open fully when the cone gets wet. Perfect for naturalistic terrarium and vivarium setups.

The benefits of Pine Cones

Pine Cones make great decorative pieces within any enclosure, their unique shape creates environmental enrichment through a variation of surface textures and they are readily used by isopods and other members of your clean up crew (CUC). Reptiles enjoy foraging for feeder insects which will hide in pine cones, they are natures version of a slow feeder bowl! They look great in either arid, forest or tropical settings and are ideal for use in naturalistic and Bio-active terrariums.

Fresh pine is not recommended for use with reptiles, but these fully dried and aged pine cones are perfectly safe to use. Whilst collecting your own pine cones is possible, it does come with some risk. Areas of high pollution, where pesticides have been used, an increased risk of disease, introduction of unwanted pests such as fungal gnats, slugs, and spiders into your terrarium; usually outweigh the benefits. Therefore, heat treated, fully dry pine cones make a much safer and stress-free alternative for you and your exotic pet.

How to use Pine Cones

  1. Scatter anywhere on the substrate in the enclosure for decorative effect, creating clusters will encourage foraging behaviours.
  2. Mix with other seed pods, nuts, leaf litter and moss to create a forest floor (detritus layer).
  3. Spot clean regularly, removing waste and insect husks will help to minimise mould growth.
